Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham was ejected from the court during a WNBA game against the Connecticut Sun following a heated interaction with the opposition at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse Arena on Wednesday.
Indiana Fever secured an 88-71 win, and in the final minute of the fourth quarter, Cunningham committed a hard foul on Sun’s Jacy Sheldon. The incident sparked a near-brawl between the two, with both Sophie and Jacy getting ejected from the court.
After the match, Sun’s coach Rachid Meziane said that Sophie’s behaviour was “completely stupid”.
“For me, it’s just disrespectful to do that foul when you are winning the game by 17 points, completely stupid,” Meziane said.
On the other hand, Fever’s coach Stephanie White had another outlook.
“It was pretty obvious that stuff was brewing,” White said in reference to her star player, Caitlin Clark, being troubled throughout the game. She was blindsided by a hit from Marina Mabrey after a few exchanges with Jacy earlier in the game.
“When the officials don’t get control of the ball game, when they allow that stuff to happen, and it’s been happening all season long. It’s not just this game, this is what happens, right?” she added.
